Roll Forming

Roll forming is a continuous operation where sheets, strip, or coiled metal is bent or formed into shapes with an identical cross section throughout the length of the sheet. The process involves feeding the sheet between sucessive pairs of contoured tool steel rolls that shape it into the desired cross section. The sheet or coil may pass through one to ten set of rolls, or stands. This process adds both strength and rigidity to the metal sheet. The metal is only bent or formed during the roll forming operation. The thickness of the metal is not changed while passing through the rolls, except where tight radii occur, minimal thinning will occur. Care must be taken when designing the rolls to allow for a smooth transition from roll to roll, thus preventing blemishes on the finished surface of the sheet.

The roll forming process has been in use for more than 1000 years. Roll forming, on a very small scale, was used in the formation of jewelry by Egyptians and Aztec indians. Profiles were cut into circular stones and gold or silver was rolled between them to create intircate shapes. The modern roll forming process was invented in the early 1900's for use in the construction industry. Doors, trim and moldings were soon produced quickly and efficiently. The industry has continued to expand , encompassing a global reach throughout many different types of industries. 

Roll forming can be a very affordable process when processing large quantities of sheet or coil. The initially high cost of the forming rolls is offset by the production of many thousands of feet of formed metal. Production speeds of 100 to 300 feet per minute are common. Roll forming is generally performed in quantities from 20,000 feet to many millions of feet. Coil handlers and stacking systems minimize labor costs, by reducing the amount of operator handling. Other metal forming operations, such as embossing and piercing, can be added to a roll forming line, making roll forming even more appealing to the end user. 

Most ductile metals including hot rolled and cold rolled steel, galvanized, plated and polished metal sheet, aluminum, copper, brass and stainless steel can be roll formed to tight radii. Sheets and coils as thin as .005” and as thick as 1/2” can be formed. The width and length of the finished part are only limited by the capacity of the rolling machine. 

Industires that commonly use roll formed parts include automotive, construction, home appliances, marine, medical, aerospace, agricultural and energy. Trim, door panels, roofing, framing studs, siding, and gutters are common roll formed products used in the construction industry. Rails, channels, angles, tubing, C, Z and T shapes are common shapes that are used throughout a wide spectrum of industries. Take a look around, there is a good chance that many of the products surrounding you will have components formed by the roll forming process.

Accuracy control for roll forming machine equipment,make precise goods

Many customer are really care about their products after roll forming. Customer’s need beautiful and smooth profiles which help their business cause you know no one like bad products. So what we should do is to guarantee the accuracy of their products which mean guarantee the accuracy of our roll forming machine. It include the profile size accuracy, the output length accuracy and cutting accuracy. 

First, we guarantee the profile size accuracy, the main point is to guarantee the designing of the rollers and shaft. All the rollers and shafts should be stricted control according to customer’s profile sizes and customer’s material. Usually the tolerance of rollers should be ±0.05mm to guarantee the profile sizes.  Also the gap of the roller and shafts should be controled in one small size, for example the gap should be ±0.1mm. If the gap is too big, the forming material will go to wrong direction which very bad situation. If the gap is too small, the rollers can’t installed on the shaft. 

Second,the output length accuracy. It is not so bad than the profile tolerance. But we should keep it in one acceptable range. For example, the tolerance is ±2mm for some products. But there mush be some higher requirements from customers no matter if it is necessary, customers are always going for perfect! Of course they will pay the price. Some of our measures like change the chain drive tobe gearbox, change the commom motor to be servo motor  and change the Combination of the chain to be single chain.,etc. The purpose is to reduce the inertia when cutting formed products.

The cutting accuracy is also very important for customers cause the end oof profile may deformed after cutting. So we should think about the cutting way, for example change the saw cutting to be hydraulic cutting, or change the hydraulic cutting to be saw cutting. That’s depend on customer’s material and products. Aslo how to make the cutting mould is also very important. The tolerance should me little to guarantee accuracy. But i hope customer to understand that usually the little deformation at the cutting end is can’t avoid no matter in China or other countries. 
So if we guarantee such accuracy, we should be sucessd in making one high standard equipment for our customers. That’s why many customers come back again for second cooperation with us. I hope more and more potential customer can know us and understand us. We are going for quality, but keep cheap price. Help customer is helping ourselves.

Good question!
The roll forming machine is the machine original from Germany and developing at moderm times. Especially in some developed countries like USA, Germany,Italy. But everybody should know there is one developing country on the world which have the industry almost cover every area include the roll forming machine industry! Who’s it? China! Right!
Some years ago, i usually like to ask my customer that have you even been to China? Most of them will say it was his first time and with great interest to look around of China. But nearly years, most of customers will say of course and look at you with strange eyes like saying” strange question”! So i think if you ask what is your favourite city in China”will be better, right?
